Your Child Is in Great Hands

Storytelling

Philosophy

At The Square Nursery School, we believe that education is not just about acquiring knowledge, but about nurturing the whole child—emotionally, socially, and intellectually. Our philosophy is built on the foundation that every child is unique and deserves a caring, inspiring environment where they can flourish and feel confident to explore their world.

We are committed to fostering an atmosphere of warmth and belonging, reminiscent of a second home. Here, children are encouraged to express themselves, make discoveries, and build relationships, all within the secure and loving confines of our school setting.

Our educational approach is deeply rooted in the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), focusing on learning through play—a method proven to support young minds in developing both critical thinking and social skills in a natural, engaging way. We tailor our activities to meet the needs and interests of each child, promoting inclusivity and diversity, ensuring that every child feels valued and understood.

Partnerships with parents are vital to our philosophy. We believe in open communication and collaborative engagement with families to ensure that children feel supported not only in school but also at home. Together, we strive to create a community that supports the lifelong journey of learning, making The Square Nursery School a true extension of each child’s family.

By embracing these principles, we prepare our children not only for the next stages of their educational journey but also to become curious, compassionate, and informed individuals in the wider world.

Our School Day

At The Square Nursery School, we take pride in offering our children a well-rounded experience that perfectly blends adult-led and child-initiated activities. Recognising the critical role of play, we create environments where children can learn, explore, and expand on their knowledge. This allows them to navigate their social interactions and relationships effortlessly. Our adult-led activities provide enriching opportunities for learning new things and exploring new horizons.

Our daily routines are designed to foster independence and a sense of belonging. Activities such as hanging up coats, putting on outerwear independently, washing hands, and enhancing bathroom skills are integral. Our days are filled with song and story time, outdoor play, fruit cutting, and setting the table for lunch, helping children feel secure and aware of what to expect next.

Outdoor play is a crucial part of our curriculum, with time spent in our beautiful garden where children can connect with nature—planting seeds, hunting for bugs, or simply revelling in the freedom of the outdoors. This direct interaction with nature nurtures their curiosity, appreciation for the environment, and encourages physical activity.

Creativity is encouraged daily through arts and crafts, which allow children to express their artistic talents, and through imaginative play where they build and create from blocks and other materials. Our day concludes with story time, immersing the children in magical tales that transport them to worlds of wonder, ensuring they end their day with calm and contentment.

Our weekly activities, aligned with individual session plans, include:

  • Monday: Music & Movement

  • Tuesday: Spanish

  • Wednesday: Cookery

  • Thursday: Drama

  • Friday: Show and Tell

Exploring topics such as jungle animals, planting, science experiments, and transport, we engage children in activities that expand their understanding of the world around them and foster an eagerness to learn more.

We support every child's toileting and bathroom routines comprehensively and do not require children to be toilet trained before joining. For those needing an afternoon nap, we provide sleeping facilities and collaborate with parents to phase out naps gradually, ideally by the final term before starting primary school.

Daily feedback is provided at collection times, offering parents insights into their child's day and progress at nursery. Each day at our school is carefully crafted to ensure that learning is as delightful as it is educational, fostering a love of learning that will stay with our children long into their future.
